Ella Katherine Richardson

January 28, 1929 - December 18, 2021

Ella Katherine Smith Richardson died peacefully in her home on December 18, 2021. Katherine was born in Jewell Ridge on January 28, 1929 to Avery and Narcie Smith. Her idyllic childhood was spent on Smith Ridge with her many siblings and cousins creating memories that carried her to her last days. From a young age, Katherine was interested in academics, excelling in her studies, graduating from Richlands High School, class of 1947, and then attending Bluefield Business School. On August 8, 1950 Katherine married the love of her life, James Alexander (Jim) Richardson. They were lifelong residents of Jewell Ridge and parents to three boys and three girls. She was involved in every aspect of her local community. A lifelong member of Jewell Ridge Presbyterian Church, Katherine’s faith was one put into action. She served as Sunday School teacher, Women’s leader, church treasurer, Choir member and Elder. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter #104 Richlands. Further serving her community, she was a poll worker for many elections. And as a mother to six, she was always involved in school activities ranging from PTA, substitute teaching, helping organize school carnivals and LOTS of homework! Katherine was an accomplished homemaker, excelling in all that she attempted. Her greatest joy was being a wife to Jim and mother to her six children. She was always available to assist when grandchildren were born, no matter near or far. She is remembered as a loving, doting Memaw to 14 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Life was always entertaining in the Richardson household with family and friends gathering to celebrate big and small things, with loads of laughter and sometimes tears, but always love. Katherine’s door was always open for delicious food, fellowship and conversation. A wonderfully optimistic woman who knew there is good in everyone and always helped others to see that in themselves. Her family will cherish memories of the most gracious loving compassionate Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, sister, aunt, neighbor, and friend. Predeceased by her husband, Jim Richardson. Son, Michael Smith Richardson. Granddaughter, Victoria Grace Schau. Grandson, William Sneed Richardson.
