James Walker (Jim) Rasnick Jr.

James Walker (Jim) Rasnick, Jr., age 86, native and lifelong resident of the Richlands area, went to his heavenly home on February 27th, 2021. He was born to James Walker Rasnick, Sr. and Stella McGuire Rasnick of Steelsburg, on May 9, 1934. After graduating Richlands High School in 1953, he attended Indiana Tech University in Ft. Wayne, IN. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served honorably for four years. It was during the time between college and the Air Force that he met his wife to be, Betty Sawyers during a youth group meeting at Steelsburg Methodist Church. After leaving the Air Force, Jim and Betty were married and made their home in the Richlands area for over 60 years. For the first eleven years, Jim worked for Richitane and Pargas propane companies. Then, at the age of 37, he made a career change and went to work in the mines at Seaboard #1. He worked at Seaboard, and then McClure until he retired. He always worked either part or full-time as a handyman and served many home and business owners in the area. Jim served his community as a member of the Richlands Area Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Masons, and during his later years, as a volunteer at Clinch Valley Medical Center. He was a member of the Richlands First United Methodist Church and served on many boards and committees. Jim is survived by his wife, Betty Rasnick of Cedar Bluff, VA. Son, Pete Rasnick and wife Jill of Collierville, TN. Son, Ernie Rasnick and wife Beth of Tazewell, VA. Daughter, Melissa Pace and husband David of Cumming, GA. Seven Grandchildren: Andrew Rasnick, Krista Tiller, Kim Meeker, Emily Promisel, John Rasnick, Carleigh Shepard, and Christian Shepard. Six Great Grandchildren: Madelyn Tiller, Walker Promisel, Sophia Rasnick, Jack Meeker, Quinn Meeker, and Nora Meeker. Two sisters: Catherine Boardwine, and Margaret Rasnick. The family would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to Jim and Betty’s wonderful neighbors, friends, and family who have been looking out for them, as well as Legacy Hospice, Commonwealth Senior Living, and his private caregivers. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Richlands First United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be on Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at 2:00pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Bob Smith and Rev. Rod Tkach officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers are Pete Rasnick, Ernie Rasnick, Andrew Rasnick, John Rasnick, Christian Shepard, Ricky Sawyers, David Pace, and Dustin Promisel. Honorary pall bearers are Michael Tiller, Larry Worrell, Gene Hurst, Jr., R.A. Cook, and John Willis. A Masonic service will be conducted at 2:00 pm by the Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge # 260 A.F. & A.M. Military Rites will be conducted by the Casey-Shortt Post# 9640. The family will begin receiving friends at the funeral home at 1:00pm until time of service.
