Peggy Ruth Lewis

November 3, 1936 - March 1, 2022

Peggy Ruth McGraw Hardin Lewis, age 85 of North Tazewell, VA passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at the Commonwealth Senior Center in Cedar Bluff, VA. She was born November 3, 1936 in Caretta, WV and was a daughter of the late Dillard Henderson McGraw and Bertha Mae Greene McGraw. Peggy was the youngest of ten siblings. Peggy was a 1954 Graduate of Big Creek High School and was a retired teacher, having worked for many successful years with the McDowell County Head Start Program. She had a kind heart and a strong Christian faith. She was a member of the Canebrake Freewill Baptist Church, where she had devoted herself to its members and its missions; singing in the choir was a favorite activity. She grew up in Bartley, WV and resided in Berwind, WV for many years. After relocating to Tazewell, VA, Peggy attended Main Street United Methodist Church and participated in the Lucie Scott Circle. Peggy was a great conversationalist who enjoyed traveling with her many friends and special groups especially the Red Hat Society. She always had a beautiful smile and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Hardin; her second husband, Billy Lewis; one son, Gilbert Hardin; four sisters, Mildred Hoskie, Marguerite Sefton, June Shelton and Emma Jean Ramey; four brothers, Dillard, Johnny, George and Patrick McGraw. Those who survive to cherish her memory include one son, Michael Hardin of North Tazewell, VA; grandsons, Michael, Jr., Adam and Channing; granddaughters, Kelsey and Ally Hardin. She was proud and felt blessed to have several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, remaining close to Steve, Derek, Dwayne and Meredith McGraw and great-niece, Melanie McGraw; her youngest brother, Eddie McGraw and wife, Mary Ellen of North Tazewell, VA; special friend and caregiver, Edith Marquez of North Tazewell, VA; a host of other relatives and many friends also survive. Funeral Services for Mrs. Lewis will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2022 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Reverend Darrell Long officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, VA. Family members and the men of Canebrake Freewill Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, March 7, 2022.
