William I Asbury

William I. Asbury, age 87, of Cedar Bluff, Virginia, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at his home. He was born in Cedar Bluff and was the son of the late Walker Eli Asbury and Maude Calhoun Asbury. William was a retired miner having worked as a roof bolter and underground shuttle car operator at Tiller at Jewell Ridge and Splash Dam at Haysi. He was a member of UMWA Local #7170 at Splash Dam. He was a U.S. Army Veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Nannie Elizabeth Asbury; sister, Gladys Perkins; brothers, Thomas and Thurman Asbury; and stepdaughter, Regina Stiltner Yost. Survivors are: His wife of 51 years: Zana Asbury Daughter: Arlene Hutchinson of Abingdon, Virginia Son: Kenneth Asbury and wife, Tyann of Cedar Bluff, Virginia Stepdaughters: Nancy Buckles Wingo, Charlotte Wingo, and Marcella Osborne and husband, Ronald Sister: Hazel Canter of Maxwell, Virginia Grandchildren: Brittany Hutchinson; Chelsea Parker and husband, Drew; Matthew Hutchinson and fiancée, Shariah Cloud; and John Luke Asbury Great Grandchildren: Julian Ortiz, Brooklyn Ortiz, Maisie Parker, and Broderick Hutchinson Several Step Grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren also survive. Special thanks to the nurses and staff of Legacy Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Legacy Hospice, 1963 2nd Street, Richlands, Virginia 24641. Funeral services for William I. Asbury will be conducted Thursday, June 16, 2022, at 2pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with Rev. Jeff Kinder officating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Matthew Hutchinson, John Luke Asbury, Stanley Sparks, Harry Whitt, Brent Musick, and Wayne Altizer will be pallbearers. The family will begin receiving friends at 1:00 PM until the time of the service.
