Allen Eugene "Pops" McKinney Sr.

Allen Eugene “Pops” McKinney, Sr., age 73 of Berwind, WV, formerly of English, WV passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at Carillion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, VA. He was born July 10, 1947 in English, WV and was a son of the late Ray and Minnie Sue Ashworth McKinney. Allen was a 1965 Graduate of Big Creek High School and had worked for over twenty-two years as District Manager of the West Virginia ABC Commission. Mr. McKinney was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War and was a Life Member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA. Allen was a proud member of Berwind Masonic Lodge # 141 in Berwind, WV and was a 32 Degree in the Scottish Rite and was a member of the York Rite as well. He was a loyal supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Wounded Warrior Project. He had a big heart and was generous to a fault. Mr. McKinney enjoyed the game of Golf, listening to music and watching football. Mr. McKinney was a free spirit who loved his country and embraced life and he lived it to the fullest. He had a spark and joyful presence, which was contagious. In most recent times, Mr. McKinney was a part of the fellowship of the Tazewell First Assembly of God and was ministered to by Pastor Jimmi Watson. He loved his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and love of his life, Katherine Ann Henderson McKinney; one brother, James Wayne “Jimmy” McKinney. Those who survive to cherish his memory include two sons, Allen McKinney, Jr. and wife, Shirl of Berwind, WV and Randy McKinney and wife, Renee of North Carolina; a loving sister, Cathy Nelson and husband, Charles of Tazewell, VA; a faithful brother, Dennis McKinney and wife, Carol of Martinsburg, WV; eight grandchildren who brought much joy to his life, Randy McKinney, Jr. of Richmond, VA, Patrick McKinney, Zachary Allen McKinney, Nicholas McKinney, and an honorary granddaughter, Madison Mays, all of North Carolina, Miranda McKinney and Colton McKinney both of Pennsylvania, Justin Arlequin of Florida; a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends also survive to cherish his memory. Funeral Services for Mr. McKinney will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2021 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Rev. Darrell Long officiating. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of the VFW. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2021. COVID-19 precautions will be observed. Honoring Mr. McKinney’s wishes, his body will be cremated and any further services will be private.
