Bill Tinsley

Bill Alvie Tinsley, age 89 of North Tazewell, VA died Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, VA. He was born August 9, 1922 at Coalwood, WV and was a son of the late Glenwood and Nettie Altizer Tinsley. Mr. Tinsley was a graduate of Big Creek High School and a retired coalminer having worked for thirty-eight years at Pocahontas Fuel Company in Bishop, VA. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic – Pacific Theater. Mr. Tinsley was a member and Past President of the United Mine Workers of America Local #6023 at Bishop, VA and the Barns-Beavers Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 7136 in Tazewell, VA. He was of the Christian faith and attended Riverside United Methodist Church in North Tazewell, VA. Bill loved to fish. He will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved him. In addition to his mother and father, Mr. Tinsley was preceded in death by one son, Scotty Ira Tinsley; ten brothers; four sisters. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Clara Fern Griffitts Tinsley; two daughters, Sandy Tinsley McAllister of Oakridge, TN and Caroline Tinsley Page of Indiana; one daughter-in-law, Anita Tinsley of North Tazewell, VA; three grandchildren, Brian Tinsley and wife, Rebecca of Roanoke, VA, Ian Tinsley of Charlotte, NC, and Phelan Tinsley of Radford, VA; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Tinsley and Stella Tinsley of Roanoke, VA; several nieces and nephews, many other family members and friends. Funeral services for Bill Alvie Tinsley will be conducted at 2:00 pm, Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Hurst – Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Rev. Mark Sexton officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be Ian Tinsley, Brian Tinsley, Ronnie Perkins, Tommy Tinsley, Garner Bandy and Freddy Howery. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of the Casey – Shortt VFW Post #9640 in Richlands, VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 – 9 pm Friday, October 7, 2011.
