Douglas Smith

Douglas Avery Smith, age 77, of 432 Glory Road, Blountville, Tennessee passed from this life July 7, 2008 at Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol, Tennessee following a long illness. Born in Tazewell County, Virginia on November 14, 1930, Doug was the son of the late Frazier and Erma Brown Smith. Doug was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean Conflict. He retired as a brakeman for the Norfolk Southern Railroad after 36 years of employment. Doug was also a member of Shekinah Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Ketchum Smith, his brothers, Mason, Lawrence, James, Charlie and Curtis Survivors include: His wife, Janet Wilson Smith of Blountville, Tennessee Sons: Richard “Khris” Smith, Abingdon Douglas A. Smith, Jr. and wife, Melanie of Chilhowie Sister, Janet Smith Addington and husband, Dallas of Jewell Ridge, Virginia Grandchildren: Emily Smith Nester and husband, Travis, Matthew Smith and wife, Danielle, and Avery Smith. He is survived by three great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Other survivors include his stepchildren, Cathy Smith Cox and husband, Greg of Chapmanville, West Virginia, Terri Smith Alsbrook of Blountville, Tennessee, Randy Smith and wife, Karen of Richlands, Virginia and Jeffery Smith and wife, Anne of Earlysville, Virginia. Also surviving are eight step grandchildren: Jason Alsbrook, Jessica Blankenship and husband, Eddie; Erin Hann and husband, Dylan, Will Smith, Kelly Smith, and Evan Smith, Avery Smith and Graham Smith . He is also survived by two step great grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Doug A. Smith will be conducted July 10, 2008 at 2:00pm at the Hurst Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, with Dr. Sue Curran and the Rev. Raymond “Buddy” Herald officiating. Interment will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. Friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be employees of Norfolk and Southern Railway. Members of the American Veterans Honor Guard Association will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call after 6:00pm Wednesday night at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia
