Ernest "Ernie" Cox Jr.

One of the “good ole boys”, Ernest “Ernie” Cox, Jr., passed from this life on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, in a Roanoke, Virginia hospital. Ernie was born on October 14, 1939, in Richlands, Virginia, and was the son of the late Ernest Cox, Sr., and Ruby Grey Lamie Cox. He was a 1957 graduate of Richlands High School and later married the love of his life, Judith Long Cox. He worked many years for S&S mining company until they closed and later worked for CLA Associates in Tazewell that sold and repaired tractors, lawnmowers and most farm and yard equipment. Ernie was not only a good man but a hard-working man who always took care of his family. He was well-known around town and liked and respected by all who knew him. He loved softball and baseball; he played all through high school and even tried out for the major leagues. Throughout his young adult years, he played on local town teams for many years. Ernie was a number one fan of the Richlands Tornado football program. He never missed a game if possible. He was kindhearted and never met a stranger. His nieces and nephews loved him as a second dad, and he considered them as his children of the heart. He was a proud lifetime resident of Richlands and had no desire to live anywhere else. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Judith A. Long Cox, sister, Emily Ann Cox, and brothers, Tom Cox, and Dan Cox. Those that remain to carry on his loving spirit are his: Daughters: Amanda G. Cox Winegar and husband Daniel of Rogersville, TN Robin Hargis Norris, and husband, Barry of Gulfport, MS Sisters: Connie Coleman of Martinsville, VA Bonnie Floyd and husband, Mike of Dyersburg, TN Ruth Nelson and husband Mike of Richlands, VA Nancy McGee and her husband, John of Jackson, OH Brother, Bill Cox of Richlands, VA Grandchildren, Lauren Flores, Dylan Flores, Eli Winegar, Ethan Winegar Several great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family, and friends also survive. The funeral service for Ernest “Ernie” Cox, Jr., will be at 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Rick Whitt officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. The pallbearers will be Keith Stanley, Tommy Cox, Jr., George West, Dylan Flores, Austin Belcher, Zach Deel, Stephen Marshment and Doyle Winegar. The family will begin receiving friends on Saturday at 1:00 PM until the time of service.
