Gilbert Cook

Gilbert Randall Cook, age 81 of the Adria community of North Tazewell, VA died Monday, July 27, 2009 at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV. Born December 22, 1927 at Hotchkiss, WV he was a son of the late Lonnie Wilber Cook and Ocie Bolt Cook. He was a retired coal miner, having worked forty years for U.S. Steel at Gary #14 in Gary, WV, and was a member of the UMWA Local # 6025 at Bishop, VA. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War, II. Mr. Cook was a man who had a passion for the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping; he also enjoyed bowling, and bowled for many years in the area bowling leagues. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Beatrice Dickens Cook, who passed into eternity in 1981; one sister, Irma Keaton; three brothers, Orville Cook, Donald Cook, and a brother who died as a toddler, Lonnie Wilber Cook, Jr. Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of twenty-four years, Gay N. Blevins Cook; three children, Herman Cook and wife, Helen, Christine Thompson and husband, Tony, and Rick Cook and wife, Shelia all of Tazewell, VA; three step-sons, Farley A. Christian, Jr. and wife, Patricia of Richlands, VA, Lonnie D. Christian and wife, Robin of Australia, and Brian I. Christian and wife, Bonnie of Tazewell, VA; three sisters, Norma Lee Accord of Hotchkiss, WV, Eunice Cragett of Crab Orchard, WV, and Phyllis Murdock and husband, Ron of Jacksonville, FL; five brothers, James Cook and wife Marcella of Shady Spring, WV, David Cook and wife, Susan of Rantoul, IL, Ralph Cook and wife, Pat of Dothan, AL, Harold Cook and wife, Mary of Mt. Pleasant, MI, and Frank Cook and wife, Evelyn of Beckley, WV; five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild; many other loving family members and friends. Funeral services for Gilbert Randall Cook will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with the Rev. Farley Christian, Jr. and Minister Lee Blackburn officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, VA. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 – 9 p.m. Friday, July 31, 2009.
