James Curtis Smith

James Curtis Smith, age 77, of Richlands, Virginia, was surrounded by his loving family as he gently drew his last breath, at his home, on Tuesday, January 5, 2016. He was born in Jewell Ridge, Virginia and was the son of the late Wesley Edward Smith and Edgar Short Smith. He was a graduate from Richlands High School Class of 1956. Curtis was the owner and operator of Curtis Body Shop from 1969-2015. He was a charter member of the Cedar Bluff Community Church where he served as a deacon and choir director. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Jackson and his brother Lester “Groundhog” Smith. He is survived by: His Loving Wife, Marjorie Shook Smith Daughter, Carolyn Smith Michaels of Richlands, VA Sons: Richard Curtis Smith and his wife, Beth of Richlands, VA Shannon James Smith and wife, Tammie of Richlands, VA Ryan Edward Smith of Cedar Bluff, VA Son of the Heart, David Cole and wife, Haley of Dallas, GA Half-sister, Ada Slate Harrison of Meadowview, VA Brothers: Johnnie Smith and wife, Jean of Cedar Bluff, VA Donald Smith of Cedar Bluff, VA Grandchildren, Britney Smith; Savanna Smith Childress and husband Wendell; Catherine Smith; Miranda Smith Keene and husband, Zack; Nathan Michaels; and River Michaels. Grandchildren of the Heart, Holston Cole, Macy Cole and Paisley Cole. The funeral service for James Curtis Smith will be conducted at 1:00pm on Thursday, January 7, 2016 at the Cedar Bluff Community Church at Claypool Hill, Virginia with the Rev. Johnnie Smith and Rev. Don Smith officiating. Grandsons and Josh Hess and Nathan Ham will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of the Cedar Bluff Community Church. Burial will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. A visitation will be held at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.
