James Mervin Stilwell

James Mervin Stilwell, age 86 of the Baptist Valley Community of North Tazewell, VA died Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at his home. He was born March 29, 1929 in Tazewell County, VA and was a son of the late Squire Washington “S.W.” and Rosie Chambers Stilwell. Mr. Stilwell was a retired coal miner, having worked for many years at Consolidated Coal Company and PERMAC Coal. He enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, wood working and being with his family and friends; he never met a stranger. He was of the Christian faith and a member of the Tazewell Family Worship Center at North Tazewell, VA. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Adolphus “Dolf” Stilwell; two grandchildren, Sharon White and Sherry White. Those who survive to cherish his memory include his loving wife of sixty-eight years, Annie Pauline Stilwell; four daughters, Linda Sue Elkins and husband, Harold, Rose Ann White and husband, Harley “George” White, Pauletta Patton and husband, Calvin and Debbie Hodge and husband, Michael all of North Tazewell, VA; three sisters, Trudell Stilwell, Jean Stilwell and Wilma Harman and husband, Lindsey all of North Tazewell, VA; one brother, Mike Stilwell of Bristol, TN; sister-in-law, Nancy Stilwell of North Tazewell, VA; five grandchildren, Michael Elkins, Sr., Chrissy White Monk, Richard and Damon Patton and Leeanne Hodge Billings; seven great-grandchildren, Michael Elkins, Jr., Nickolas Elkins, Mackenzie, Caleb, Isabella, Matthew Patton and Richard Anthony Patton, II.; special friend, Barbara Asbury; friends and caregivers at Legacy Hospice: Jamie Smith, Regina Rose, Debbie Williams and Sara Ellis; several nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends also survive. Funeral services for James Mervin Stilwell will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 5, 2016 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with Rev. Lawrence Hayes, Rev. John Ralph Repass and Rev. Don Waddell officiating. Entombment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will be Glenn White, Dennis White, Damon Patton, Rick Patton, Mike Elkins, Mikey Elkins and Nickolas Elkins. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday, February 4, 2016.
