Jane Lee Martin

Jane Lee Lilly Martin, age 93, was called home to be with her beloved Lord Jesus on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at the Commonwealth Senior Living center in Abingdon, Virginia. She was a long-time resident of Pineville, West Virginia, and Richlands, Virginia, and spent the last 8 years of her life in Abingdon, Virginia. She was a charter member of the Richlands First Methodist Church and attended Pleasant View Methodist Church after moving to Abingdon. Jane or “Mom”, “Aunt Jane,” Nana” has joined her husband, John H. Martin (March 21, 1929-September 6, 2021) in Eternity after an earthly life together of 72 years of marriage. Jane was also preceded in death by her parents, Thelma Lilly Weaver and Paul Weaver; sister, Burke Weaver Taylor; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Hickman Martin, Connie Martin Gorman; niece, Kimberly Martin Jackson; brother-in-law, Bill Taylor; and great-grandson, Zachary Yates. She is survived by her three children, John Paul Martin and wife, Catherine Stroud Martin, Jeane Martin Hutton and husband Clark Hutton, and James (Jim) Martin and wife, Denise Lawson Martin. Also surviving are brothers-in-law, Jack Martin, and Bob Martin and wife, Anita Pendry Martin; grandchildren, Joel Martin and wife, Brittany; Joshua Martin; Shafer Belisle and wife, Samantha; Catherine Belisle Monserrate and husband, Luis; Jeffrey Ball and wife, Debbie; Jessica Ball Chance and husband, Joel; Richard Hutton and wife, Kathy; Chris Hutton Lafferty and husband, Patrick; Amy Martin Porter; Ann Martin Bottom and husband, Brandon; and Matthew Martin. Great-grandchildren Hadley, Maddox, Haley, Zachary, Zoe, Katie, John, Alexander, Benjamin, Meredith, Charis, Kiera, Toby, Samantha, and Ella Grace. Great-great-grandchildren, Joann, Kaitlyn, Elliana, Blair, Richard, and Caroline. Her special niece, Myra, and several other nieces and nephews also survive. She is also survived by her special companion, Ellie Mae. Jane lit up any room she occupied with her warmth and genuine smile. She loved to humor the family with jokes. She loved all types of music and, when unable to attend church, enjoyed singing hymns with her family. Jane would give you the coat off her back and drive through a blizzard if you needed help. She radiated joy around children and had endless hugs to give. Jane grew up in the depth of the Great Depression on the extended family farm, walking long distances to school. Her intellectual aptitude was noted and she was able to skip the second grade. Though she was only 4‘11 1/2 inches tall, she played basketball. She married during her senior year of high school and followed her husband, John to Belleville, Illinois and Bangor, Maine while he served in the United States Air Force. Her first two children were born at Dow Air Force Base, Maine. After returning to Pineville, West Virginia, her third child was born, and there she started raising her children. Moving to Richlands, Virginia, in 1963, she helped with the family budget as a legal secretary. She also bowled in a women’s bowling league. She was active in church, singing in the choir, visiting shut-ins, arranging flowers, and participating in outreach and fundraising projects. She volunteered to work in Civic events and even did the ”Can-can” in a talent show with a chorus line of women for a charitable cause. Later in her working life, she was employed at Cumberland Mountain Community Service, where she was recognized for her outstanding secretarial work. Jane was one of those notable persons in the ever-changing evolution of human history who brought light and goodness to the world. As she transcends these earthly confines, her love and warm smile remain with all who knew her and loved her. Godspeed, Adieu, Bon voyage! Funeral services for Jane Martin will be conducted Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 1pm at the Richlands First Methodist Church, 402 Suffolk Avenue, Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Devin Schultz officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Jeff Ball, Joel Martin, Brandon Bottom, Joel Chance, Toby Porter, and Bill Taylor. Friends may visit from 12-1 pm at the church prior to the funeral.
