Jerry Walter Colwell

Jerry Walter Colwell, age 73 of North Tazewell, VA passed away Saturday, January 23, 2021 at the Charleston Acute Rehabilitation Center in Charleston, WV. He was born August 31, 1947 in Hazard, KY and was a son of the late Curtis and Virginia Combs Colwell. Jerry had worked for Consolidated Coal Company for over eighteen years and retired as an Engineer from Norfolk & Southern Railroad with over eighteen years of service. Mr. Colwell was a United States Army Veteran, serving during the Vietnam War Era. Jerry was of the Christian Faith and was a member of the Canebrake Freewill Baptist Church in Canebrake, WV. His Church was his life and he loved the Church and his Church family. Jerry enjoyed singing gospel music and serving as Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Choir Director. He also played golf and liked going to Flea Markets. Mr. Colwell was a Master Mason in Berwind Masonic Lodge #141 in Berwind, WV. He was a light in dark days and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Pat Haywood; his mother in-law, whom he loved dearly, Gussie Tipton; one nephew, Scott Little. Those who survive to cherish his memory include the love of his life and wife of fifty-two years, Anita Tipton Colwell; one daughter, Robin Hayes, whom he loved dearly and her husband, whom he loved like a son, Larry Hayes of North Tazewell, VA; his granddaughter, Tiffany Hayes of North Tazewell, VA, all of whom brought him much joy and was adored and loved by him; one sister, Ronda Grzyb and husband, Larry of Rolesville, NC; one brother, Gary Colwell and wife, Debbie of Bishop, VA; one nephew whom he loved as a son, Kevin Tipton; a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends also survive. Graveside Services for Mr. Colwell will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at the Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA with the Rev. Darrell Long officiating. Pallbearers will be Mike Hatfield, Jerry Jordan, Bill Adams, Dennis Hayes, Lawrence Hayes and Buck Perry. The family will receive friends at the Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum from 12:00 p.m. (noon) - 1:00 p.m.; COVID-19 precautions will be observed. Masonic Rites will be given by the Brethren of Berwind Masonic Lodge #141 and Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA.
