Kenneth Robert Dye

Kenneth Robert Dye, lovingly known to everyone as “Pop,” passed away peacefully in North Carolina, leaving behind a legacy of faith, love, sacrifice, kindness, and devotion to his family. Born on November 4, 1947, Kenneth lived a life marked by quiet strength and an unwavering commitment to the people he loved. At 18 years old, with the courage and sense of duty that would define so much of his life, he served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His service was an expression of the honorable man he was—humble, courageous, and always willing to give of himself. During his service, Kenneth was awarded the Vietnam Service medal, the Vietnam Campaign medal as well as the National Defense Service medal. These military honors and accomplishments will be remembered as an important part of the legacy he leaves behind. To those who knew him best, Ken’s greatest accomplishments were not found in medals or titles, they were found in the way he loved his family. For nearly 59 years, Kenneth loved one woman with his whole heart—his high school Sweetheart, his wife, Patricia Ann Dye. They were preparing to celebrate their 59th wedding anniversary on September 13th. Their life together was a testament to commitment, companionship, and a love that endured through every season of life. Patricia was not simply his wife; she was his partner, his home, and the love of his life. Kenneth was also a devoted father. He and Patricia were blessed with two daughters, Revonda Cottrell and Kim Steele. Although Revonda passed away in 2015, her place in her father's heart remained. For years, Kenneth carried the love of his daughter with him, and now his family finds comfort knowing that Pop has been reunited with Revonda in Heaven. His daughter Kim was by his side in a profound way during the final 17 months of his life, becoming his caregiver after an accident in May 2025 leaving Ken a paraplegic due to a spinal cord injury. Kim’s love, sacrifice, and devotion during those months were a beautiful reflection of a special love between a father and daughter. And then there were his grandchildren, who brought a unique joy into Pop’s life: Sydney (& Dave) Gordon, Caleb (& Raina) Altizer, Hannah Cottrell, and Kendra Broussard. He loved them deeply and took pride in watching them grow and build lives of their own. If asked about his greatest treasures, there is little doubt that Pop would have pointed to his great-grandchildren, Isaiah, Jax, and Leila Gordon, who were his pride and joy. They brought a special light into his life, and the love he had for them was unmistakable. Being their Pop was one of the greatest blessings of his life. Kenneth was a man with a humble and kind spirit and a heart that was always willing to give. He had a way of making people feel cared for, and his generosity was not limited to what he could give materially. He gave his time, his love, his wisdom, his encouragement, and his presence. He was an honorable man who lived his life with a quiet strength that those around him will never forget. Above all else, Kenneth was a strong and dedicated Christian. He was lifelong member at Bethel Assembly of God in Richlands. His faith was not simply something he professed—it was a part of who he was. He loved the Lord, trusted in Him, and looked forward to the promise of Heaven. His family takes comfort in knowing that his earthly struggles are over and that he is now home with his Savior. After all he endured, we can picture Pop exactly where he belongs—whole, healed, and dancing on the streets of gold in Heaven, reunited with Revonda and other loved ones that have gone before him and surrounded by the presence of the Lord. Though our hearts are broken by his absence, we are grateful for the life he lived, the love he gave, and the legacy he leaves behind. The name “Pop” will forever carry the memory of a man who loved deeply, gave freely, served honorably, and walked faithfully with God. Kenneth also leaves behind his faithful little companion, Porscha, who will remain with Patricia. His family will miss his voice, his presence, his kindness, his infectious smile, and most of all, the unconditional love that made him “Pop.” Until we see you again, Pop, save us a dance on those streets of gold. Surviving siblings are Evelyn Reynolds, Donald “Gene” Dye and Larry Wayne Dye. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you make a donation to St Jude Children’s Hospital, which is Ken’s favorite charity. Funeral services for Kenneth Robert Dye will be held on Friday, September 11, 2026 at 2:00 PM, with Dr. Don Bartley, Rev. Rick Cole, and Rev. Rusty Ward officiating. Interment will follow at Hankins Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. Pallbearers are Anthony Frazier, Terry Ray, Nick Shortridge, Keith Reynolds, Doug Dye, Mark Dye, David Dye, and James Barrow. Honorary pallbearers and Special Friends: Dr. Don Bartley, Allen Whited, Danny “Redd” Horton, Keith Cottrell, Keith Richardson, and Danny Bostic. A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until the time of service. Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites.
