Larry Gene Whited

Larry Gene Whited, age 66, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Saturday, January 21, 2023 at the University of Virginia Medical Center after a long, hard-fought battle with cancer. Larry was born August 12, 1956 and was the son of the late Branson Whited, Jr. and Barbara Dye Whited. He was a lifelong resident of Richlands and seemed to know everyone in town. He loved the Washington Redskins (he never would call them the Commanders) and the Duke Blue Devils, and you could usually see him in one of those caps when he was out and about. He graduated from Richlands High School in 1974, and immediately went to work in the coal mines like his father before him. He worked in the mines for 18 years for Island Creek, Clinchfield Coal Company and Pittston, among others. After he left mining, he went to work for Lowe’s Home Improvement, moving from “yard boy” to store manager. He retired in 2018, but he never really “left” the store. He loved his co-workers like family. He was a proud Master Mason. He was a member and past Worshipful Master for both Richlands Masonic Lodge #318 AF&AM and Cedar Bluff Masonic Lodge #260 AF&AM. He was also a member of the Clinch Valley Commandry No. 20 of the Knights Templar; the O’Keefe Chapter 26 of the Royal Arch; and the Joseph Bayard Cole Council N. 236 of the Allied Masonic Degrees. Larry was a faithful member of the Richlands First United Methodist Church; the Richlands Lions Club; and a very willing volunteer for the Good Samaritan Food pantry. Those left to cherish his memory include: His Wife of 22 years: Helen Kirby Whited Daughters: Cheryl Lewis of Pigeon Forge, TN Christina Whited of Bluefield, Virginia Sons: Bryan Carmody and wife, Erika of Suffolk, VA Patrick Carmody of Louisville, KY Grandsons: Christopher Johnson, Dakota Johnson, Tanner Johnson, Brooks Carmody, and Benjamin Carmody Granddaughters: Midajah Smith, Abigail Smith, Juliet Carmody Special Aunt: Peggy Rasnake of Honaker, Virginia Special Uncle: Jerry Dye of Swords Creek, Virginia Two Cats: Simon and Moonpie The family is especially grateful to Dr. Fady Tawadros and the nurses of the CVMC Outpatient Infusion Department for their help and many kindnesses to Larry during his illness. Memorial services for Larry G. Whited will be conducted Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at 11:00am at the Richlands First United Methodist Church, 402 Suffolk Ave, Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Gordon McBride officiating. Friends may call after 6pm on Tuesday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30pm.
