Lewey Sparks

Lewey C. Sparks, age 77 of Thompson Valley, VA died Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center in Bristol, TN. He was born March 19, 1935 at Berwind, West Virginia and was a son of the late Leslie and Mary Mitchell Sparks. Lewey was a United States Army Veteran of the Korean War and was a Life Member of the Barns – Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA. He was baptized into the Christian faith by Rev. Robert Buckles and was a member of the Wilbur Memorial United Methodist Church in Tazewell, VA. Mr. Sparks had retired from Eastern Stainless Steel, Inc. in Baltimore, MD where he had been employed as a Steel Worker; he was a member of the United Steel Workers of America, Local #1245 in Baltimore, MD. Lew was a fun loving man, who, as a story teller, enjoyed spinning yarns and tales of his time in military service, during the Korean War and his service time while stationed in Germany. He was a Patriot, who loved his Country, his Flag, and his fellow man; he was proud of his service to his country. His grandchildren were his life, and they gave him so much joy; he will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte Maxine Johnson Sparks; two sisters, Allene Lambert Peak, and Villa-June Large. Those left to cherish Lew’s memory include his loving wife of twenty-one years, Diana B. “Dee” Sparks; six children, Pamela Hartman and husband, Raymond of Baltimore, MD, Leslie Sparks and wife, Jennifer of Syracuse, NY, Randolph Sparks and wife, Kathy of Florida, Sandra McGonigle and husband, Terry, Robert Sparks and wife, Jennifer, and Melissa Delaney and husband, Frank, all of Baltimore, MD; one sister, Joann Semple of Maine; one brother, Sam Sparks of Arizona; twelve grandchildren, David Horst, Jr., Heather Horst, Jason Hartman, Leslie Sparks, Robert Sparks, Steven Sparks, Tiffany Sparks, Tyler Sparks, Jeremy Trimble, Ronnie Wayne Sparks, Sophie Delaney, and Nathaniel Delaney; one great-grandchild, Daegan McGouirk; a host of other family members and many, many friends. A Christian Mass for Lewey C. Sparks will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012 at the Hurst – Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with Jim Lambert and the Rev. Jack Jenkins officiating. Military Honors will be conducted by members of the Barns – Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA. In honoring Mr. Spark’s wishes, his body will be cremated with a private burial at Glen Haven Memorial Park in Glen Burnie, MD at a later date. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 6 – 7 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2012.
