Michael Bundy Hickman

Every so often, the world is blessed with a man of honor and strength, and when that man passes, he can never be replaced. Michael Bundy Hickman, age 74, of Tazewell, VA, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026 in the early morning hours at his home. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and strength. He was born on November 14, 1951 in Richlands, VA, to the late Franklin “Bus” Hickman and Hazel Sparks Hickman. He was a graduate of Richlands High School Class of 1970. After graduating high school, he courageously served his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam. Michael worked as an assistant funeral director at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home for over 20 years, helping to bring comfort to the community during times of mourning. He did not stop serving and honoring his country, as he served in the Virginia Defense Force for 28 ½ years and later became the Post Commander of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640. He took great pride in his work as commander, working tirelessly to honor those who served their country. He humbly answered the call to attend the funerals, honoring his brothers and sisters who fought just as he did. Rain or shine, Michael always showed up. Softspoken and gentle, he was a friend to all and would do anything he could for those he loved. Young of Minot, ND Step-Children: April Armes and husband, Ted of Richlands, VA Jill Horn and husband, Doncurtis of Richlands, VA Sisters: Martha Huffman of Front Royal, VA Mary Boyd of Cedar Bluff, VA Grandchildren: Kyle Hickman, Ziongrace Compton, Waylondale Young, Olivia Horn, Claire Horn, Sarah Foster, Eric Lester Great-Grandchild, Alice Brooke Hickman A host of family and friends also survive Funeral services for Michael Bundy Hickman will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026 at 7:00 PM at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home with the Rev. Dickie Plaster officiating. Pallbearers will be Jamie Boyd, Kennis Lester ,Doncurtis Horn, Ted Armes, John Hickman, and Kyle Hickman. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640. Interment will be held at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin, VA. Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites. A visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until the time of service.
