Riley RC Cole

Once in a very rare blue moon, an extraordinary individual is born, 88 years ago at a place now called Cole’s Landing, Riley C. “RC” Cole was that individual. RC fought a long hard battle with his illness and passed away Monday, November 27, 2023, in a Kingsport, TN hospital. RC was the son of the late, Robert Edward Lee Cole and Madgie F. Wimmer Cole and was a loving son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. RC joined the Army at age 23, and after returning home he married his soul mate and the love of his life, Peggy Honaker Cole. They moved to District Heights, Maryland, where RC went to work for 7-Eleven and worked his way up to a manager position. After moving back to Whitewood, he opened his first store in 1970 known as RC Cole’s Grocery which later became Double R Grocery. He opened a few more stores over the years, and after retiring he could not just sit around so he went to work at Save-A-Lot food store for a small period. RC then became a beloved employee of Hurst-Scott Funeral Home and truly loved the people he worked with. He was a long-time member of the Odd Fellows of Grundy, Virginia, and the Oak Grove Church of Christ where he and Peggy loved to sing. RC was well known as a giver, not a taker. He truly had a heart of gold, if he knew that someone was in need, he would make sure to help, or lend a helping hand. RC was a well-respected man in the community, he always supported the schools and the athletic programs. His death was a great loss to all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Girtrue Jackson, Hubert Cole, Robert D. Cole, Dennie Cole, Joyce Honaker, and Lois Ann Houchins. Those that remain to carry on his loving spirit are his: Loving wife of almost 62 years, Peggy Jean Honaker Cole of Jolo, WV Children: Peggy Ann Cole of Jolo, WV Linda Cole Adams and her husband David, of Oakwood, VA Pamela Cole Arrington and her husband, Richard of Warrenton, VA Joshua Douglas Cole and his wife, Michelle of Kingsport, TN Sister, Yuvon Mullins and her husband Ray of Richlands, VA Sisters-in-law, Frances Wimmer and Nora Cole Grandchildren, Tyler Adams and Paula, Riley Arrington and Alexandria, Lindsey Overfield and Anthony, Shannon Adams and Kaylee Reedy. Great-grandchildren, Knox Adams, and Jett Castle Special great-great niece and nephew Hunter Bostic and Piper Bostic. A host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews also survive along with a host of family and friends. Special thanks to his home health nurse, Sarah Weber, and doctors and nurses of Holston Valley, Johnston Memorial and Hospice. Funeral services for Riley C. “RC” Cole will be conducted on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 12:00 PM at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev’s Charlie Cooper, Hobart Kennedy, and Dennis Wimmer officiating. From Cradle to grave, RC will return to White Mountain to be interred at Cole’s Landing. Pallbearers will be Joshua Cole, David Adams, Richard Arrington Tyler Adams, Riley Arrington, and Shannon Adams. Honorary pallbearers will be David Cole, Matthew Cole, Anthony Overfield, and the Staff of Hurst-Scott Funeral Home. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the Casey-Shortt VFW Post# 9640. Friends may visit with the family on Friday, December 1, 2023, from 6 pm until 9 pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia. A singing service will begin at 7 pm.
