Robert Lee Carner

Robert Lee Carner, age 90 of Pounding Mill, VA died Monday, February 19, 2018 at Heritage Hall Health Care in Tazewell, VA. He was born March 21, 1927 at Richlands, VA and was a son of the late Virginia Carner Asbury. Bob was a retired Engineer with Norfolk Southern Railroad. He was a United States Navy Veteran of World War II. Mr. Carner was a faithful member of the Cliffield Christian Church – Disciples of Christ, where he served as Elder, Sunday school teacher and sang in the choir; he was the oldest living member of the Church. He was an avid golfer and was a lifetime member of the Tazewell County Country Club. Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, mowing grass and taking care of his apple tree orchard. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Jeremy Cole; one half brother, Jack Asbury; one half sister, Sadie Smith. Those who survive to cherish his memory include his loving wife of sixty-nine and one half years, Virginia Earls Carner; two daughters, Rita Scarberry and husband, William of Cedar Bluff, VA and Dawn Cole and husband, Ellis of Pounding Mill, VA; one son, Wayne Carner and wife, Brenda of Richmond, VA; one sister, Linda Ruth McGlothlin of Pounding Mill, VA; five grandchildren, Craig Scarberry, Kevin Scarberry and wife, Amy, Joshua Cole and wife, Sara, Zachary Cole and wife, Alex and Kaitlyn Carner; ten great-grandchildren; a host of other family members and friends also survive. Funeral Services for Robert Lee Carner will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA with Rev. Joshua Cole officiating. Burial will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA. Pallbearers will grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The men of Cliffield Christian Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, VA from 6 – 9 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2018.
