Robert Louis Hess

Robert Louis Hess, age 82, of North Tazewell, Virginia, drew his last breath here on earth on Monday, August 12, 2024, following an extended illness. Robert was born November 12, 1941, in Richlands, Virginia, the son of the late Carlus Hess and Elizabeth Hunnell Hess. He received an associate’s degree in accounting in college and worked as an accountant for many years for Allied Chemicals and AT Massey. After retiring, he decided to learn a new skill and became a butcher at Food Lion, where he worked for several years. Robert was a very loving and dedicated father; he worked hard to provide for his kids, which was his top priority. He raised them with good work, ethics, and morals. He never missed one of their sporting events or important events. He also attended his grandkids activities. Robert was a die-hard sports fan; he loved the Atlanta Braves and UVA Cavaliers men's basketball team. He enjoyed watching westerns and collecting Indian memorabilia. He believed in staying fit, lifting weights, enjoyed gardening and traveling, and was a member of the Destiny Outreach Ministry. He was a lifetime resident of the local area and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Mack Lynn Hess, Lawrence Everett Hess, and Edward Andrew Hess; grandchild Taylor Hess; and great-grandchildren Hope and Paige Cole. Those that survive him are: His Children: Robin Thomas and her husband, James of Tazewell, VA Rick Hess and his wife, Wanda, of North Tazewell, VA Terry Hess of Summerville, South Carolina Sister Peggy Kelly and her husband, John of Tazewell, VA Grandchildren: Lisa Cole, Ryan Thomas, Leanne Thomas, Summer Hess, Brooke Plott, Quinn Lewis, Kristen Hess. Great-grandchildren: Claire Cole, Faith Cole, Lilly Plott, Finley Plott, Elijah Adams, Carter Lewis, Talan Lewis, Saylor Lewis, McKenna Cush, and Parker Kuijf. In Lieu of flowers, memorial donations should be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105. Mr. Robert L. Hess's funeral will be at 1:00 PM on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell, Virginia, with the Rev. Lawrence Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Carlos Hess, Carl Hess, Drew Plott, Steven Harry, Stanley Cox, and Josh Cox will be pallbearers. The family will begin receiving friends on Thursday at noon at the funeral home until the time of service.
