Rodger Mosley

Rodger Austin Mosley, age 87 of Richlands, passed away April 9, 2011 at his home. He was born February 24, 1924 in Shortts Gap, Virginia and was the son of the late Franklin and Louisa Bucklen Mosley. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired miner from Pittston Coal Company with over 40 years of experience. He was a decorated Army veteran who served his country in France during World War II. During his service, he was awarded the American Theater Service Ribbon, the European African Middle Eastern Service Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. After his discharge from the Army, he went to work in the coal mine. He was a member of Richlands Presbyterian Church and United Mine Workers of America Local #1256. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, and volunteering in the community. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers: James Percival, John, and Harold Mosley and one sister, Trudell Shortt. Survivors include: His wife of 65 years: Gertie Reba Shortt Mosley Four Sons: Jerry Mosley and his wife Becky of Bluefield, Virginia, Carlos Mosley and his wife Rebecca of Richlands, Virginia Jim Mosley of Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey Michael Mosley and his wife Terri of Richlands, Virginia One Brother: Dan Mosley of Sacramento, California Three Sisters: Irene Sloan of Ocala, Florida, Gaye Johnson of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Bea Richards of Richland Grandchildren: Tracy Cox, Austin Ann Rose and her husband Casey, Jennifer Mosley, Michaela Mosley, and Jackson Mosley Great-grandchildren: Derek Jones, Andrew Cox, and Kenneth Zackary (K.Z.) Rose; Several nieces and nephews; special caregivers Billy Wilson and Mary Jones; and hospice nurse Elizabeth Sisk. Funeral services for Rodger Austin Mosley will be conducted at 1:00pm Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the with Rev. Dennis Hoffman officiating and Arvil Arwood and Casey Rose assisting. Interment will follow at Clinch Valley Memorial Cemetery in Richlands, Virginia. The men of the Richlands Presbyterian Church will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Louis Hunter, Joe Blair McGlothlin, Harry Hess, Bill Hess, Ken Wysor, Keith Shortt, Dale Shortt, and Dailey Bucklen, Jr. Friends may call after 6:00pm Monday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Virginia. Members of Casey-Short VFW Post #9640 will conduct military graveside rites.
