Roger Dale Fowler

Roger Dale Fowler, age 69, of Princeton, West Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, in a Salem, Virginia hospital following an illness. Born in Richlands, Virginia, on August 29, 1956, Roger was the son of the late Frank Fowler and Vera Smith Fowler. After graduating from Big Creek High School, he began working underground in the coal mines. He was a proud member of the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) and deeply believed in the values and solidarity of the union. Throughout his life, Roger dedicated himself to working in several mines across the region, always working hard to provide for his family. He was a loving father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend. Anyone who knew Roger knew he was defined by his work ethic. He truly never slowed down, and even after his retirement, he constantly found new projects to keep himself busy. In his downtime, he loved watching NASCAR, cheering on NFL football, and spending time fishing. Roger was well known for his wonderful laugh, his great sense of humor, and his down-to-earth nature. He was also famously stubborn—once Roger had his mind set on something, there was absolutely no talking him out of it. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Kathy Sparks and Joyce Shumate. Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Tosha Fowler of Bluefield, West Virginia; his son, Joshua Fowler and his wife, Amanda, of Princeton, West Virginia; his sister, Jenny Blankenship of Bluefield, Virginia; and his brother, Bud Fowler of Squire, West Virginia. He also leaves behind the absolute joys of his life, his grandbabies: Kylee Fowler, Ashlynn Fowler, Ethan Fowler, Andrew “DJ” Hickman, and Aycen Hickman, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. His final shift is over, and his mining light has gone out, but his legacy remains bright in the hearts of those he loved. A service celebrating the life of Roger Fowler will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell, Virginia. The family will receive friends for a visitation beginning at noon until the hour of the service. Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell is honored to assist the family.
