Sidney H. "D - Dad" Davis

Sidney H. “D – Dad” Davis, age 83 of Canebrake, WV departed this life at Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton, WV, Sunday, October 14, 2012 and went to his heavenly home following a long illness. He was born March 16, 1929 at Excelsior, WV and was a son of the late Charlie and Helen Jessee Davis. Sidney was a devoted Christian who loved the Lord and was a member of the Canebrake Freewill Baptist Church in Canebrake, WV. Mr. Davis was a proud United States Army Veteran of the Korean War and served stateside at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, TX. He was a dedicated coal miner, having worked for Consolidated Coal Company at mines in Berwind, Newhall and Jenkinjones, WV, retiring after over forty-one years of employment. He was a member of the UMWA Local #6193 at Jenkinjones. Mr. Davis was a man who loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his great – grandchildren; working around his home, and raising a garden. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Ruth Hankins Davis; two sisters, Jean Wilson and Betty Sizemore; one brother, Jimmy Davis. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Those left to cherish his memory include three daughters, Cindy Rose and husband, Harold of Squire, WV, Donna Davis of Cary, NC, and Ricara Davis of the home; two granddaughters, Wendi Rose of Baptist Valley, VA and Traci Rose McReynolds of War, WV; two great-granddaughters, Kaci Rose of Squire, WV and Aaliyah Hagler of the home; two great-grandsons, Anthony Davis of the home and Ethan Rose of Squire, WV; sister – in – law, Faye Hankins of Princeton, WV; special caregiver, Debbie Dishman; caring neighbor and friend, Paul Cassell; several nieces, nephews, other family members and many friends also survive. Funeral services for Sidney H. “D – Dad” Davis will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 18, 2012 at the Hurst – Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA with Brother Delmar Somosky, Brother Elbert Lester and the Rev. Kenny Fields officiating. Entombment will follow at the Grandview Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Bluefield, VA. Pallbearers will be Lonnie Mitchell, Elbert Lester, Zack Billips, Desi Davis, Richard Raphael, and Bobby McReynolds. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of the Barns – Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 18, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children: Office of Development: 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
