Ms. Virginia Ruth Harrison

Virginia “Ruth” Harrison, known affectionately by all as “Granny,” went to her heavenly home on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the age of 93. She passed peacefully at her home in Bluefield, Virginia, surrounded by the family she loved beyond measure. Born in Ingleside, West Virginia, on October 4, 1933, Ruth was the cherished daughter of the late Truman and Gladys Proffitt Long. She was a dedicated worker, spending years at General Instrument and later retiring from Short Stop Foods in Tazewell, Virginia. Ruth was a woman of deep faith and community spirit, actively serving as a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bluefield and the VFW #9696 Ladies Auxiliary. To know Granny was to know a love that was fierce, unconditional, and protective. Her family was her greatest joy, her pride, and her purpose, and she always placed them above all else. Her home was filled with warmth, the aroma of her morning “pot” of coffee—because she never had just one cup—and the happy clutter of her favorite puzzles. Ruth was also famously competitive; her passion for family card games was legendary. She played to win and never went easy on anyone, a trait that brought endless laughter and joyful memories to family gatherings. Ruth is reunited in heaven with her loving husband, Ellis “Garland” Harrison; two sisters, Frances Shrader and Connie Newman; three brothers, Larry Allen, Alfred “Bud” Long, and Kenneth Long; and her beloved great-grandson, Brandon Hicks. Her beautiful legacy of fierce love and devotion lives on in the hearts of those she left behind: Daughter: Janis Moore and husband, Mike, of Bluefield, Virginia Son: Jimmy Harrison and wife, Tina, of Ridgeway, South Carolina Sisters: Shirley Monger of Roanoke, Virginia Wanda Harris and husband, David, of Roanoke, Virginia Lovetta Saunders and husband, Galen, of Roanoke, Virginia Sisters-in-Law: Ann Long of Irmo, South Carolina Dana Roberts and husband, Clyde, of Chattanooga, Tennessee Grandchildren: Tammy (Natasha), Michael (Deana), Valorie (Jake), and Melissa (Justin) Granny also leaves behind ten precious great-great-grandchildren, along with several special nieces and nephews. Her family was her whole world, and she was theirs. She will be forever loved, forever missed, and forever remembered as their beloved “Granny.” She will be deeply missed, but her love will guide her family for generations to come. The family would like to express their deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ward, the staff of the CCU Unit at Princeton Memorial Hospital, and Legacy Hospice for the compassion and loving care they provided to Ruth. A very special and heartfelt thank you is extended to her dear friends and caregivers, Jane and David Jilpin, for their kindness, love, and care. The family is also deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support from her church family, neighbors, friends, and everyone who touched Ruth’s life. Funeral services for Granny Viginia “Ruth” Harrison. will be conducted Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at 1 pm at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Tazewell, Virginia, with the Rev. Billy Kurtz, Pastor Don Scott, and Rev. Ray Amis officiating. Entombment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Virginia. Pallbearers will be her family. Friends may visit with the family from 12 pm until 1 pm on Tuesday prior to the funeral at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Tazewell, Virginia.
