Virginia "Jenny" Scott

Hattie Virginia “Jenny” Hughes Scott, age 87 of Pounding Mill, went to be with her Lord and Savior peacefully on February 20, 2015 at a Hospice House in Bristol, VA, due to complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. Jenny was born on January 12, 1928 in Hansonville, VA and was a home delivery. She was the daughter of the late George Washington and Lula Ellen Johnson Hughes. Jenny graduated from Lebanon High School in 1946 with 62 classmates. Upon graduation, Jenny moved to Bluefield, VA where she was employed by Superior Sterling. On September 13, 1957 Jenny married George Warren Scott of Athens, WV and they settled in Richlands and raised their family. Jenny resided in the Richlands area for 56 years. Jenny had been an active member of First Christian and Gethsemane Baptist Churches. Throughout her lifetime she always had a giving spirit and was always ready to help the sick and any others that needed her generosity. She had a gift of reaching out to others in need. Her generosity included taking children into her home (and in her heart forever) while his mother had surgery, shopping for older friends, driving people to doctor appointments, collecting money for flowers upon the death of community leaders or whatever was needed. Jenny gave tirelessly to those around her. Later in life, Jenny worked at Richlands Elementary School as an aide in the library. She loved children and this was the perfect job for her. In many cases this was more of a ministry than a job and she loved every single minute of it. She made a big difference in many children’s lives. In addition to her parents, Jenny was preceded in death by her husband, George Warren Scott; sisters, Eileen Wampler, Clara Wampler. Lucille Hicks, Beulah Salyers; brothers, Thomas Hughes, Frank Hughes, Beecher Hughes and Edgar Hughes. Survivors include: Daughters: Susan Scott Jennings and husband Michael of Greensburg, PA Jennifer Scott Beavers and husband Hobert Beavers of Pounding Mill, VA Sister, Velma Street Grandchildren: Justin Beavers and wife, Amanda Shelton Beavers of Richlands, VA Brian Beavers of Pounding Mill, VA McKenzie Jennings of Greensburg, PA Great-grandchildren, Rylan Beavers and Brady Beavers of Richlands, VA Extended family, Pat and Steve Joyce of Pounding Mill, VA who took her into their home, caring and loving her as part of their family as well. As Ann VosKamp aptly said in One Thousand Gifts, “We stand on the brink of eternity.” And in II Timothy 4:7, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” Jenny has entered eternity. Funeral services for Hattie Virginia “Jenny” Hughes Scott will be conducted at 7:00 pm on Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Pastor Marc Brooks officiating. A committal service will be conducted at 11:00am on Monday, February 23, 2015 at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Justin Beavers, Brian Beavers, Derick Joyce, Chris Wimmer, Bobby Sargent and James Marshall. Honorary pallbearers will be McKenzie Jennings. The family will receive will receive friends on Sunday evening form 5-7pm until time of service.
