Wayne Bruffey Via

Wayne Bruffey Via age 85 of Richlands, Virginia was surrounded by his loving family at his home as he drew his last breath on this earth on Friday, July 16, 2021. Wayne was born in Alexandria, Virginia, and was the son of the late David Morgan Via and Madge Lee Bruffey Via. He attended Broadus Wood School near Earlysville, Virginia which later consolidated with other high schools to become Albermarle High School from which he graduated. In October of 1959, Wayne joined the U.S. Army and served in the infantry until 1965, when he transferred to the U.S. Army Reserves. After returning home, he later married his sweet Dorothy, and some years later moved to the Richlands area. Wayne worked as a Richlands Town police officer for several years before retiring. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and The VFW. Wayne was well known for his kindness and thoughtfulness toward others. He was a very talented storyteller who could captivate all who listened. He loved his John Deere and working in the garden. His number one priority has been his family, they were his greatest joy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Dorothy Via; son, Anthony “Tony” Greenawalt; brothers, David M. Via, Jr., Roland M. Via, Raymond S. Via, Edward R. Via; sisters, Verna F. Via and Grace L. Via Baker. And his canine companions. He is survived by his: Sons: Rodney Godbey of AZ Carl Godbey and wife Audrey of Richlands, VA Daughters: Carletta Jean Cruey and husband, Randy of Richlands, VA Debra Pond of Myrtle Beach, SC Daughter in law, Robin Greenawalt of Dublin, VA Brother, John F. Via of Barboursville, VA Grandchildren, Cpt. Joseph W. Greenawalt of U.S. Army; Jade Greenawalt of Christiansburg; Jacob W. Greenawalt of Christiansburg; Justin M. Pond of Texas; Jennifer Sallee Patton and Jonathan Andy Sallee. Great-grandchildren, Jackson Greenawalt, Megan Cruey Watson, Jonathan Wayne Sallee, and Hayleigh Abigail Sallee. The family has chosen Kims Florist as their florist, 276-964-1021. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Rick Whitt officiating. Entombment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Relatives and friends will serve as pallbearers. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the VFW Post #9640. A visitation will be held on Monday evening at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands from 6:00 – 9:00 pm.
