Wilbur "Doug" Hancock

Wilbur Douglas “Doug” Hancock, Sr., age 78 of Burkes Garden, VA died Sunday, November 27, 2011 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, VA. He was born February 15, 1933 at Bland County, VA and was a son of the late Wilbur Weeden Hancock and Carrie McMeans Hancock. He was a retired assemblyman with Ford Motor Company in Buffalo, New York and was a member of the United Auto Workers. Mr. Hancock was a United States Army Veteran and a member of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post # 7136 in Tazewell, VA. He was a Charter Member of the Tazewell Moose Lodge #198. Doug was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Methodist Church. He was a loving family man who enjoyed the outdoors and going to the family hunting camp with his brothers and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Brian Keith Hancock; one sister, June Cash; four brothers, Charles Hancock, Mack Hancock, Kenneth Hancock, and Mitch Hancock. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of twenty-three years, Ruth Ann Mason Hancock; two daughters, Belinda Hancock and Rebecca Zenella and husband, Roger, all of Gloversville, NY, three sons, Wilbur Douglas Hancock, Jr. of North Carolina, Adrian Hancock and Dougie Hancock, both of New York; two sisters, Anna Hough and husband, Harry of Vienna, VA and Elizabeth Collins of Wytheville, VA; seven brothers, Edwin Hancock of Nokesville, VA, Bobby Hancock and wife, Margaret of Pulaski, VA, David Hancock and wife, Trudy of Columbus, GA, Jerry Hancock and wife, Joyce, Ralph Hancock and wife, Barbara, all of Tazewell, VA, Stanley Hancock and wife, Mary Liz, and Garland Hancock and special friend, Patsy Nelson all of Burkes Garden, VA; three special nephews, Tommy, Timmy and Stan Hancock, all of Burkes Garden, VA; one special niece, Ashley “Tweety Bird” Hancock of Burkes Garden, VA; one sister in-law, Bea Bradshaw and husband, Jake of North Tazewell, VA; many grandchildren and great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, other family members and many friends also survive. Funeral services for Wilbur Douglas “Doug” Hancock, Sr. will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the Hurst – Scott Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, VA. Burial will follow at the Central Church Cemetery in Burkes Garden, VA. Pallbearers will be Garland Hancock, David Hancock, Bobby Hancock, Timmy Hancock, Big Stan Hancock, and Little Stan Hancock. Honorary Pallbearers will be Edwin Hancock, Jerry Hancock, Ralph Hancock, and Jackie Hancock. Military Graveside Rites will be conducted by members of the Barns-Beavers VFW Post #7136 in Tazewell, VA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home after 12:00 noon on Thursday, December 1, 2011.
