Mr. Willie Ervin Horn

Mr. Willie Ervin Horn, a beloved father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, in Richlands, Virginia, following a brief illness. He was 102 years old. A long-time resident of the Shortt’s Gap area of Raven, Virginia, Willie lived a remarkably full, vibrant, and impactful life that spanned over a century. Born in the Big Branch area of Buchanan County, formerly known as the Roth community, Willie was the son of the late Jacob Horn and Lutishia Perkins Horn. He grew up with a deep-rooted work ethic and commitment to his community. For many years, he worked in the coal mines and later served as manager of the Weller Yard Clubhouse for the Norfolk Southern Railroad. Beyond his professional life, Willie was a man of immense talent and passion. He was exceptionally gifted musically; a self-taught guitarist and pianist from an early age, he shared his love for music by singing with several gospel quartets. Willie was also a dedicated voice teacher who coached many adults in singing, helping them lift their voices and read musical notes. While music filled his soul, gardening captured his heart. Plowing, hoeing, planting, and tending to the earth brought him immense joy, and his efforts always culminated in a beautifully fruitful harvest. Willie was also known for his sharp wit and strong opinions. His favorite saying, "I'm never wrong," brought constant laughter to those who knew him. In his mind, he never was—and of course, his family always lovingly let him think he was right. Family was the cornerstone of Willie's existence. He cherished his 12 siblings, his children, grandchildren, and extended family. He was a mainstay at family reunions, where he proudly accepted plaques for being the oldest family member. For many years, he and his beloved wife, Lovis, were also honored as the longest-married couple. Willie was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Willie’s melody, his laughter, and the lessons he planted in the hearts of others will grow for generations to come. He is now peacefully reunited with his parents; the love of his life for 68 years, Lovis Webb Horne; his daughter, Patricia Ann Kinder; and his 12 siblings: Virgie Matney, Patty Stiltner, Flora Belle Stiltner, Mae Horn, Elizabeth Shelton, Ernest Horn, Ira John Horn, Squire Hurley Horn, Edward Horn, Harvey Joshua Horn, Hayes Horn, and Andrew Chester Horn. The funeral service for Willie Ervin Horn will be at 2:00 PM on Sunday, July 26, 2026, at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia, with Rev. Don Smith officiating. A private entombment will be on Monday at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 1:00 Pm until the time of service.
